The Nation Science Foundation’s NSFNET, linked five supercomputer centers between UC San Diego, Princeton, University of Illinois, Cornell and the Supercomputer Center in Pittsburgh. Regional networks followed, including the eventual reassignment of pieces of the government’s ARPANET to NSFNET. NSFNET allowed commercial Internet use in 1991 ahead of everything else, eventually decommissioning it’s backbone in 1995 leaving the Internet as a self-sufficient entity.
