1992 — June 29th: Silicon Graphics merges with MIPS
Silicon Graphics Inc, aka SGI, was known mostly for it’s high-end workstations and graphics processing capabilities. The company merged with MIPS Computer Systems causing speculation about the future of the graphics software and hardware company. SGI was responsible for pioneering many widespread techniques in the computer industry. MIPS was a high-speed chip developer that believed in achieving speed by reducing the amount of information in a transmission, simplifying processes and reducing the instruction set. They are responsible for the creation of the RISC processor.
